Delinquency and service protection

Understand the shut-off process before it reaches your door

The safest time to ask about a past-due balance, payment arrangement, or hardship protection is before the final notice. This page translates the provider’s published rules into a practical checklist.

Notice and timing

How delinquency is handled

Grace period after the due date

Zero additional grace days are stated: the MAWSS billing FAQ says the bill is due when rendered and becomes delinquent if not paid by the date shown. Non-receipt of a bill does not release the customer from prompt payment.

Late-fee calculation

The 2026 fee schedule charges a delinquent-account fee of 10% of the delinquent amount plus a $5 delinquent-processing fee. A returned payment charge is $35. Other listed charges include a $20 backdated service charge and a $10 annual dormant-account charge; the exact applicability depends on account status and service type.

Disconnection timeline

The bill is due when rendered and is delinquent after the printed due date. MAWSS’ public pages do not state a universal day-by-day number of days from delinquency to physical shutoff. The 2026 fee schedule lists a $500 charge to re-establish a cut-off sewer service from delinquent status, while the customer must contact MAWSS for the account-specific water reconnection requirements and balance due.

Statutory warning protocol

What notice should you expect?

MAWSS’ consumer privacy notice states that a customer in danger of being cut off for nonpayment may receive an automated phone call explaining how to pay electronically. The reviewed public pages do not publish the complete notice count, mailing interval, statutory warning period, text sequence, or door-hanger protocol; customers should contact 251-694-3100 as soon as a delinquent notice appears.

If a notice seems wrong

Document the account balance, payment confirmation, notice date, and any household medical or accessibility concern. Then call the provider using the contact information on its official bill or profile before the stated deadline.

Restoring service

Reconnection costs and timing

The 2026 miscellaneous-fee schedule lists a $60 regular service charge for 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., a $100 priority service charge for nights, weekends, and holidays, and a $60 go-back/turn-on charge. A transfer or new-service request also carries a $60 next-business-day service charge; all outstanding delinquent balances and applicable deposits or fees may be additional.

Need a payment arrangement?

Ask before the shut-off date

Tell the customer-service representative that you are responding to a delinquency notice and ask specifically about installment plans, hardship protection, charity referrals, and the amount required to stop the disconnection order.

Customer protection guide

What to do when a bill becomes urgent

A delinquency notice from Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) should be treated as a time-sensitive account document. Read the exact due date, amount required, notice method, and contact instructions on the notice, then compare them with the provider details in this guide.

If you have already paid, gather the confirmation number and posting date. If you cannot pay the full amount, call before the stated shut-off date and ask about arrangements, hardship protections, agency referrals, and the minimum amount needed to pause action.

Keep the conversation specific: ask what will stop the order, when the payment must post, whether a reconnection fee applies, and whether the utility requires a separate request for medical, accessibility, or household-protection status.
