Delinquency and service protection

Understand the shut-off process before it reaches your door

The safest time to ask about a past-due balance, payment arrangement, or hardship protection is before the final notice. This page translates the provider’s published rules into a practical checklist.

Notice and timing

How delinquency is handled

Grace period after the due date

21 days after the bill date for the Terre Haute sewer bill; Indiana American Water's individual water-account due date is printed on the bill and must be followed.

Late-fee calculation

Terre Haute sewer charges not paid by the 21st day are delinquent and receive a one-time 10% late fee on the delinquent wastewater charges under Indiana Code 36-9-23-31. Indiana American Water's customer pages direct customers to the individual bill and tariff for water-account late rules.

Disconnection timeline

Terre Haute Sanitary District sends an additional final Disconnect Notice stating the disconnect-eligible amount, payment deadline and when/where to pay before submitting a mutual metered account for water disconnection. If interrupted, a $65 disconnect fee is added and the fee plus delinquent charges must be paid before restoration. The reviewed pages do not publish the number of days between final notice and submission.

Statutory warning protocol

What notice should you expect?

The City's final Disconnect Notice identifies the minimum amount needed to avoid interruption, the deadline and payment location; Indiana American Water also supports past-due and shut-off notices to a designated third party and emergency text/email/phone alerts through Alerts1View. The reviewed pages do not establish a universal door-hanger sequence.

If a notice seems wrong

Document the account balance, payment confirmation, notice date, and any household medical or accessibility concern. Then call the provider using the contact information on its official bill or profile before the stated deadline.

Restoring service

Reconnection costs and timing

Indiana American Water's low-income program page states that no nonpayment reconnection is performed after regular business hours except on specified Fridays, weekends, holidays and days before holidays; a reconnection fee and after-hours fee apply after 3:00 p.m. on those days. The reviewed Terre Haute public pages do not expose the exact current Indiana American Water dollar amounts. The separate Terre Haute sewer disconnection fee is $65.

Need a payment arrangement?

Ask before the shut-off date

Tell the customer-service representative that you are responding to a delinquency notice and ask specifically about installment plans, hardship protection, charity referrals, and the amount required to stop the disconnection order.

Customer protection guide

What to do when a bill becomes urgent

A delinquency notice from Indiana American Water Company - Terre Haute (Wabash Valley) Operations should be treated as a time-sensitive account document. Read the exact due date, amount required, notice method, and contact instructions on the notice, then compare them with the provider details in this guide.

If you have already paid, gather the confirmation number and posting date. If you cannot pay the full amount, call before the stated shut-off date and ask about arrangements, hardship protections, agency referrals, and the minimum amount needed to pause action.

Keep the conversation specific: ask what will stop the order, when the payment must post, whether a reconnection fee applies, and whether the utility requires a separate request for medical, accessibility, or household-protection status.
