Delinquency and service protection

Understand the shut-off process before it reaches your door

The safest time to ask about a past-due balance, payment arrangement, or hardship protection is before the final notice. This page translates the provider’s published rules into a practical checklist.

Notice and timing

How delinquency is handled

Grace period after the due date

For residential customers, New Jersey's utility customer protections prohibit late fees and require proper notice before shutoff; the reviewed customer pages do not publish one universal calendar-day grace period for Atlantic County accounts.

Late-fee calculation

The New Jersey Residential Utility Customer Protections page states that investor-owned utilities may not impose late fees, interest, or liens on residential accounts because of late payments. The tariff separately describes a 0.35% late-payment charge for nonresidential customers beginning on the 26th day; that rule does not apply to protected residential accounts.

Disconnection timeline

No single Atlantic County day-by-day shutoff calendar is published on the reviewed 2026 customer pages. Residential service may be terminated only after the notice process required by New Jersey law, and shutoffs are limited to Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; they may not occur on Friday, weekends, holidays, or the day before a holiday.

Statutory warning protocol

What notice should you expect?

American Water's account system can deliver bills, past-due notices, and shut-off notices, and customers may designate a third party to receive copies. Customers are encouraged to call 1-800-272-1325 before the due date for payment arrangements. Eligible households may receive seasonal termination protection and may self-certify or notify the company verbally; medical-emergency continuance may also apply under New Jersey rules.

If a notice seems wrong

Document the account balance, payment confirmation, notice date, and any household medical or accessibility concern. Then call the provider using the contact information on its official bill or profile before the stated deadline.

Restoring service

Reconnection costs and timing

The current tariff states that restoration requires correction of the delinquency and payment or satisfactory arrangement, with restoration within 12 hours after proper application. The regular reconnection charge varies by applicable Rate Schedule P-2 or 9-A and was not exposed in the reviewed page; restoration outside normal business hours carries a published $100 emergency reconnection charge.

Need a payment arrangement?

Ask before the shut-off date

Tell the customer-service representative that you are responding to a delinquency notice and ask specifically about installment plans, hardship protection, charity referrals, and the amount required to stop the disconnection order.

Customer protection guide

What to do when a bill becomes urgent

A delinquency notice from New Jersey American Water - Atlantic County should be treated as a time-sensitive account document. Read the exact due date, amount required, notice method, and contact instructions on the notice, then compare them with the provider details in this guide.

If you have already paid, gather the confirmation number and posting date. If you cannot pay the full amount, call before the stated shut-off date and ask about arrangements, hardship protections, agency referrals, and the minimum amount needed to pause action.

Keep the conversation specific: ask what will stop the order, when the payment must post, whether a reconnection fee applies, and whether the utility requires a separate request for medical, accessibility, or household-protection status.
