Pay by text

Decatur Utilities does not publish a text-to-pay keyword or SMS bill-payment enrollment sequence. The billing page states that providing an email address and phone number opts the customer into future email, text, and/or phone notifications, but payment is made through SmartHub, the dedicated phone line, bank draft, kiosks, or other listed channels.

Decatur Utilities, P.O. Box 2232, Decatur, AL 35609.

Cash payments are also documented at participating Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Dollar General, and 7-Eleven locations using the bill barcode, at MoneyGram locations, and through the SmartHub/VanillaDirect retail path; the third-party retail fee is $1.50 per transaction.

What you can use online

SmartHub accepts online check and card payments. Decatur Utilities also supports a dedicated automated phone payment line for check or card, bank draft from checking or savings, and budget billing tied to bank draft. The current public billing page does not claim Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal support.

2026 transaction pricing

Convenience fees

No general SmartHub online card surcharge is published on the current billing page. A $1.50 third-party fee applies to cash payments at listed VanillaDirect retail locations; Decatur Utilities states that it does not receive that fee. A returned check is $30 under the published service-fee schedule.

Fees can vary by payment type, channel, account class, and processor terms. The checkout screen is the final fee disclosure.

Payment guidance

Choose the payment channel that fits your deadline

The safest payment path is the one published by Decatur Utilities (Municipal Utilities Board of Decatur) and matched to the account information on your bill. Online portals are convenient, but telephone, mail, counter, and drop-box options may follow different posting schedules and may use different fees.

For a routine payment, save the final confirmation page or IVR number and check when the transaction will post. For a same-day shut-off notice, do not assume that submitting a card payment automatically stops a field order; ask the provider what amount and confirmation are required.

Never send your account number, password, card details, or bank information to Water Ledger. Those details belong only on the provider’s verified payment channel or at an authorized counter.
