Delinquency and service protection

Understand the shut-off process before it reaches your door

The safest time to ask about a past-due balance, payment arrangement, or hardship protection is before the final notice. This page translates the provider’s published rules into a practical checklist.

Notice and timing

How delinquency is handled

Grace period after the due date

The bill’s due date is at least 15 days after issuance. If payment is not received by close of business on that due date, Huntsville Utilities assesses the late fee; the policy does not promise an additional grace period after the due date.

Late-fee calculation

The late fee is calculated separately for each service: 5% of the first $250.00 plus 1% of any remaining balance above $250.00. The projected late fee for the full bill is displayed on the monthly bill, but the charge is assessed only on the unpaid balance. A $30 NSF fee applies to a returned check or bank draft; if the dishonored balance and applicable charges are not paid by close of business on the 19th, service may be disconnected and a $50 delinquency fee added.

Disconnection timeline

Bills are issued monthly and due at least 15 days after issue. Failure to pay by close of business on the due date triggers the late fee. The utility sends a Disconnect Notice stating the amount due and the date service may be disconnected; that notice provides at least four business days for the customer to invoke an Account Review Procedure. A customer who qualifies may request a payment extension, but failure to honor the extension permits disconnection without additional notification. After shutoff, the account balance and reconnection charges must be paid in full before restoration.

Statutory warning protocol

What notice should you expect?

Huntsville Utilities provides due process through mailed and/or electronic Disconnect Notice. The notice states the amount due and proposed disconnection date and explains the Account Review Procedure. Customers may request a review, investigation, hearing, or temporary restoration by supplying documentation and paying undisputed charges; the policy gives a minimum of four business days to invoke that procedure. Critical-care customers receive additional attempted phone, regular-mail, and certified-mail contact, plus a wellness check before nonpayment disconnection, but critical-care status does not permanently prevent shutoff.

If a notice seems wrong

Document the account balance, payment confirmation, notice date, and any household medical or accessibility concern. Then call the provider using the contact information on its official bill or profile before the stated deadline.

Restoring service

Reconnection costs and timing

A dedicated this detail was not publicly posted. The reviewed current Huntsville Utilities pages confirm that reconnection charges apply but do not publish a current water-specific regular-hours versus after-hours fee schedule. The utility’s official outage/emergency number is 256-535-4448 and its residential account number is 256-535-1200; customers should confirm the applicable reconnection charge before payment.

Need a payment arrangement?

Ask before the shut-off date

Tell the customer-service representative that you are responding to a delinquency notice and ask specifically about installment plans, hardship protection, charity referrals, and the amount required to stop the disconnection order.

Customer protection guide

What to do when a bill becomes urgent

A delinquency notice from Huntsville Utilities should be treated as a time-sensitive account document. Read the exact due date, amount required, notice method, and contact instructions on the notice, then compare them with the provider details in this guide.

If you have already paid, gather the confirmation number and posting date. If you cannot pay the full amount, call before the stated shut-off date and ask about arrangements, hardship protections, agency referrals, and the minimum amount needed to pause action.

Keep the conversation specific: ask what will stop the order, when the payment must post, whether a reconnection fee applies, and whether the utility requires a separate request for medical, accessibility, or household-protection status.
