Notice and timing
How delinquency is handled
Grace period after the due date
The current Rule No. 9 states that a late payment charge may apply when payment is not received before the past-due date printed on the bill; it does not provide a general extra-day grace period.
Late-fee calculation
Rule No. 9 provides a 1.5% late payment charge on the total unpaid balance when payment is not received before the past-due date, applied when a late notice is issued. The charge may compound on past-due balances; LIRA customers are exempt, and payment on the date the late notice is mailed may forgive the assessed fee under the rule language.
Disconnection timeline
California American Water may discontinue residential service 60 days after a bill becomes delinquent. A qualifying written notice is provided at least 10 days before discontinuance; disputed charges raised within five days of receiving the contested bill are investigated before service is discontinued.
