Notice and timing
How delinquency is handled
Grace period after the due date
Customers have 18 days from the billing date to pay without penalty. The due-by date moves to the next business day if the 18th day is a City holiday. Bills unpaid by the due date are subject to a 10% late fee.
Late-fee calculation
Payments not received by the due date are subject to a 10% late fee. If the account reaches the delinquency process and a disconnect tag has been printed, a $40 fee is charged whether or not the physical shutoff has already occurred. Returned automatic bank drafts incur a $30 returned-item fee, and two returned drafts within 12 months remove the account from the draft program for six months.
Disconnection timeline
The statement prints a disconnect date. If payment or an approved arrangement has not reached Water Billing by 5:00 p.m. on the day before that date, service is subject to disconnection. A $40 tag fee is incurred once the tag is printed. Online or IVR payments made on the disconnect date do not reach the Water Billing Office until the following business day and do not automatically prevent the shutoff or restore service.
